Loughborough University Undergraduate Bursaries
Overview of the Bursary Scheme
The following is an introduction to the University's undergraduate bursary scheme. Bursary and scholarship awards are subject to terms and conditions.
Terms and conditions for 2011 will appear here in due course. In the meantime here is an overview of the scheme.
The University is pleased to be operating a bursary scheme for eligible full-time UK undergraduates who joined the university in 2006 or later. The bursaries are cash payments towards living and course costs, with no ‘in-kind’ elements, and, subject to certain conditions, they will be renewed for each year of the course.
The following is an introduction to the University's undergraduate bursary scheme.
How much will the bursaries be worth?
The value of the bursaries will depend on your year of entry and your annual household income and will be based upon the results of the annual means-testing process carried out in accordance with Government regulations by one of the following;
- Student Finance England
- Student Finance Wales
- Student Finance Northern Ireland
- Student Awards Agency for Scotland
The table below details how much the bursaries will be worth for eligible new students entering the first year of their programme in 2011.
| Household Income (£) | Under 21 on entry | 21 or over on entry |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 18,730 | £1,455 | £2,910 |
| 18,731 - 21,440 | £1,230 | £2,460 |
| 21,441 - 24,650 | £900 | £1,800 |
| 24,651 - 28,670 | £675 | £1,350 |
| 28,671 - 32,430 | £450 | £900 |
| 32,431 - 36,350 | £225 | £450 |
The values in the table apply in 2011/12 to eligible new full-time UK undergraduate students entering the first year of their programme in 2011 and who are liable for the tuition fee of £3,375.
Bursary values for students who joined the University before 2011 are available here.
Are there eligibility conditions?
Yes, in order to be eligible for consideration, you will need to be:
- a permanent resident of the United Kingdom (this excludes Isle of Man and Channel Islands residents) in accordance with the relevant regulations and eligible for a UK government student maintenance/ living costs loan
- liable for the full tuition fee (£3,375 in 2011/12 - provisional figure, to be confirmed)
- undertaking an undergraduate degree course at Loughborough University as a full-time student.
In addition, to be considered for a higher level bursary, as well as being 21 or over on entry, you will be required to have commenced the first year of a full-time undergraduate degree programme and, if you have undertaken undergraduate studies previously, either at Loughborough University or elsewhere, you must have been 21 or over at the start of those previous studies.
Care leavers may also be entitled to a higher level bursary. For more information click here.
Please note: students who already have an honours degree from a UK institution are not entitled to a bursary award.
How will I know whether I will receive a bursary?
If you meet the above conditions and your household income is no higher than the upper limit in the relevant 'Bursary Values' table (see above) you could well be entitled to an award. If you qualify for a bursary you will normally be advised of your eligibility during the autumn term.
How do I apply?
You do not need to make a separate application to the University in order to be considered for a bursary. However you will need to have made a student finance application to the relevant Government body. You and your sponsors (usually your parents) will also need to have given consent to share your information with the University.
How will the means-testing process work?
General guidance can be found on the Directgov website.
How will the bursaries be paid?
The bursary will be paid into your bank account in instalments.
Will the bursary be renewed for each year of my course?
If you pass your end of year examinations and proceed to the next academic year of your course, the bursary will be renewed subject to certain conditions including the income threshold continuing to be met. If you undertake a sandwich version of the course (ie. a placement year), the bursary will not be paid in the sandwich year (normally year 3), but the tuition fees for that year will usually be very much lower.
