General University funding
Financial information for US students 2011/12
Financial assistance is available for American students studying at an overseas university through the US Government's Department for Education.
As a result of the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act 2010 (HCERA) (Public Law 111-152) signed by Barack Obama on 30 March 2010, Federal Family Education (FFE) loans will be replaced for by the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program.
Loughborough University is a participant of this programme and our Office of Postsecondary Education (OPE) ID Number is 008458-00.
Universities in the UK (Foreign Schools) complete the administration process for the new William D. Ford Direct Loan Program loans including the assessment of eligibility.
Application Process
The standard process is as follows:
1. Fill in a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) via www.fafsa.ed.gov
You will need the Loughborough University school code when filling in the FAFSA application, which is G08458.
2. Check your Student Aid Report
Once your information has been processed, you will be emailed a copy of your Student Aid Report (SAR). You are not required to send this to us. You do however need to list Loughborough University on your FAFSA. Please review the information carefully and ensure that it includes an Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) and the details of any previous loans.
If any information is missing or there are comments stating further information is required, you will need to make corrections and re-submit your application. If there is a 'C' shown next to the EFC, further information will be required. Check the comments codes and make any necessary corrections. In some cases we may need to ask you to provide documentary evidence (such as proof of US citizenship).
3. Contact Loughborough University
You should then contact the University on the details below to confirm you have been made and accepted an offer to study with us and to notify us that you have completed the application for US Federal Aid.
At this stage you can visit the William D. Ford website and click 'Applying for Direct Loans' to read and to ensure that you understand the terms and conditions under which the loan is offered and to familiarise yourself with other relevant loan information such as entrance counselling and repayment requirements.
We will send you a Cost of Attendance (COA) assessment spreadsheet in Microsoft Excel format that is based on our estimation of your living costs while at Loughborough. The COA sets an upper-limit on your borrowing for the year so you should notify us if you expect to incur additional costs while in the UK. Further information is available here. You will need to complete your COA and return it to us.
4. Go to Studentloans.gov and log in using your PIN.
You should use this site to e-sign a Master Promissory Note (MPN) and complete Entrance Counselling. The MPN allows Loughborough to provide your data to certain bodies (e.g. US Govt) and it is important that it is fully completed as we cannot complete the assessment if not. You will receive a Loan Confirmation and Acceptance letter (Award Letter) detailing the amount of aid available and asking you to confirm how much you would like to borrow.
To enable the university to transfer your living costs disbursement on to you, you are required to have a UK bank account and should therefore ensure that you bring sufficient funds with you to enable you to do so. There are plenty of banks in the UK to choose from and researching what they can offer you is advisable.
