Programmes in Geography

The following pages provide you with detailed information about our five different degree programmes and the range of modules available. We offer clear pathways through each programme and a wide choice of modules, particularly in the final year of study. All of our programmes lead to a BSc (Honours) degree.

In the first year, we introduce all students to the major current debates and research areas in both human and physical geography. In this way everyone has a firm grounding in contemporary geography and has the opportunity to meet almost all academic staff in the Department. Joint and Combined Honours students also choose modules from their other subject areas.

In year two, Single Honours Geography students continue reading both human and physical geography but can choose to weight their studies in favour of a particular aspect of the discipline. Joint and Combined Honours students can choose to specialise in either human or physical geography if they wish. It is in year two that you begin to prepare for your dissertation. This is a compulsory module for Single Honours students and an option for Joint and Combined Honours students. It is a major piece of independent work for which you undertake your own research in your chosen area. For many students it is a most enjoyable experience and a rewarding piece of work which can help with decisions on a future career.

Year three affords you a wide choice of modules. You can specialise in human or physical geography or you can select a balance between the two.
