Materials and Structures

Materials and StructuresResearch is spread across the departments of Materials Engineering, Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering, Physics and the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.

Recently the University set up five key interdisciplinary research schools to utlilise University wide strengths and encourage initiatives in important emerging areas. As one of only five schools, the Materials Research School demonstrates the importance of this area for future University research.

Research within the Department of Materials Engineering is broadly concerned with the interactions of the structure, morphology and properties of materials with processing and product performance. Activities are centred on three internationally recognised research groups, viz. Polymers, Metals and Ceramics, though there is a very substantial amount of interaction between them, especially in the field of composites.

Multi-disciplinary research within the Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering is based within the Mechanics of Advanced Materials area and looks into the response of advanced engineering materials to various types of external loading and environmental conditions, using a combination of analytical, numerical and experimental techniques. Analysis of deformation processes, damage evolution as well as failure initiation and development allows us to predict the properties, performance, reliability and structural integrity of modern materials and the components and structures made from them.

Materials and Structures research within the Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering focuses both on simulating structural load whereby finite element techniques are used to find stresses and deformations of engine components and also on the understanding of failure in composite materials which are now commonplace in modern aircraft and racing car structures
