Exploring the influence of gender in construction research
A one-day seminar exploring the influence of gender in construction research is being held at Loughborough University.
The event, hosted by the UK ‘WOMEN-CORE’ project team based in the department of Civil and Building Engineering at Loughborough, in conjunction with ARCOM (Association of Researchers in Construction Management), takes place at the campus on 18 April.
It is aimed at construction researchers from both industry and academia, and while the seminar is not exclusive to women, it will focus on exploring the effects of gender through the experiences of women.
Speakers will include Pat Morton from the Women in SET (Science, Engineering and Technology) team at Sheffield Hallam University, Dr Denise Bower from the University of Leeds, Dr Vian Ahmed from Salford University and Dr Stephanie Glendinning from the University of Newcastle. The seminar will be chaired by Loughborough’s Professor Patricia Carrillo.
As well as speakers, the event will provide a networking opportunity for construction researchers and a forum to discuss the positive and negative experiences of women in construction research. It will also contribute to the formation of a Europe-wide network of women researchers in construction that will provide an opportunity for collaboration and exchange of information, as well as a forum for advice on gender related issues and construction research generally.

1. The WOMEN-CORE team of academics – based in Loughborough University’s Department of Civil and Building Engineering – is working with a Europe-wide consortium of partners to strengthen women’s participation in construction research. The consortium has also launched it’s project website (http://www.women-core.org) where further details about the project can be found.
2. The WOMEN-CORE project, which began in April 2006 and continues until September 2008, has an overall budget of €2 million. It is co-funded by the European Commission’s Research Directorate General under the Sixth EU Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP6).
